Bio

Lazar Lyutakov (1977, Shabla, Bulgaria) lives and works in Vienna, Austria, he studied at the National Art Academy in Sofia and the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna. He represented Bulgaria at the 58th Venice Biennale (2019). His work has also been presented at the Secession, Vienna (2023);  FLUCA Austrian Cultural Pavilion, Plovdiv (2021); the 6th Moscow Biennale (2015); 1st Vienna Biennale at MAK, Vienna (2015); ICA Sofia (2015);  Blackbridge Beijing (2015); Center for Contemporary Art, Plovdiv (2011); Kunsthaus Muerz, Austria (2011) and Nha San Duk, Hanoi (2009).

Many of Lyutakov’s works appropriate ordinary articles of our modern mass culture and simple industrial products, presenting them in a way that probes their meanings and ambiguities. He carefully selects the objects, adapts and enhances them with targeted interventions. He does this in an effort to analyse contemporary conditions of production and forms of consumption, flows of capital and commodities, and aesthetic mass phenomena that reflect on values, productivity, quality, and utility in a post-capitalist industrialised world.
